The Story:

Drawn from the journals and letters found on the frozen body of Captain Scott, the action of the play blends scenes of the explorer and his men at various stages of their ordeal, with flashbacks of Scott and his young wife with fateful glimpses of his Norwegian rival, Roald Amundsen, whose party beat him to the South Pole. Refusing the use of sled dogs as unsporting, Scott and his team struggle to drag their heavy gear across a frozen wasteland, only to find that Amundsen has preced them to their goal. The play is also a study of British pride and upper-class resolve – Scotty’s aristocratic sense of destiny and command his young brid’s ability to understand her husband’s drive while failing to accept his motivations. But it is in the tragic trip back, as the members of the expedition die one by one, that the play reaches its dramatic apogee, capturing with chilling intensity the awesome bravey of men who must accep the bitter knowledge that suffering and death will be the only reward for their heroism.

Director’s Notes

I think that it is a safe be that most people can say they have heard of the tragic story of the sinking of the British luxury liner RMS Titanic. However, knowing the year in which this happened may not be so familiar. The year was 1912. Perhaps not as familiar but no less significant, was an event that also happened that year. A race to the South Pole between two rival countries – Great Britain and Norway.

After reading this play, I was struck by the depth of character each actor’s role contributes to telling this story. I have often said that each role has the opportunity to be the actor’s defining role. I am excited to be bringing this play to the life for the Theatre West community at this staged reading with such a very talented cast and crew. And my hope and desire is to have it performed in a full production here sometime in the not too distant future….

Headshot of Scott Christianson

Scott Christianson

as Evans

About Scott Christianson:

Scott discovered his love for acting and for Theater West 8 years ago when on a whim, he tried out for a part in The Odd Couple. Fate intervened and he was cast in a small part that ignited the flame! From that point on, he has joyfully become a part of Theatre West and is happy that he has found a way to give back to the local community. Scott is excited to play the part of Timmy, the young veteran coming home from the Great War. As a veteran himself, he has enjoyed getting into the development of this character and hopes to honor all veterans in portraying him.

Scott lives in Neotsu with his wife, his daughter and her fiance, his mother-in-law, and his newest love, his three-year-old granddaughter, Amaya. Both of Amaya’s parents are truly artistic using music and art as their ways of expression. Scott hopes that his acting will enhance Amaya’s love for all forms of artistic expression.
